Why is World Youth Skills Day important?

Unemployment is one of the most significant problems among youths. The latest Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020 shows that since 2017, there has been an upward trend in the number of youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET). World Youth Skills Day which is Designated by the General assembly in 2014, is scope for young people, technical and vocational education, and training (TVET) institutions. 

Approximately nearly 70% of the world’s students are affected by school closures across education levels currently. Reports said that distance training has become the most common way of conveying skills, with considerable difficulties regarding, among others, curricula adaptation, trainee and trainer preparedness, connectivity, or assessment and certification processes.

Virtual Conference on Skills for a Resilient Youth

It is organized as part of the celebrations of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) 2020, It is coordinated by UNESCO-UNEVOC in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning.

  • The Virtual Conference on Skills for a Resilient Youth takes place from 6th July to 14 July on the TVeT Forum and focus to: assess the short-, medium-, and long-term effects of the pandemic in different countries.
  • share good practices from TVET institutions about how they have retaliated to the epidemic. 
  •  Acquire understanding from the private sector, employee, and employer stakeholders about the impact of the pandemic on their sectors.
  • learn from young people about their motives and fears as well as the opportunities that they see moving forward;
  • reflect on how TVET systems can respond to the short- and medium-term impact of the pandemic, and also keeping in mind longer-lasting challenges.
