On October 29, 2004, the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada, established World Stroke Day. The day was declared to raise public awareness later in 2006. The World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society merged in 2006 to form the World Stroke Organization. Since that time, World Stroke Organization has been in charge of organizing and advocating for World Stroke Day across various media. The idea for World Stroke Day was born in the 1990s as stroke statistics increased globally. The World Stroke Organization (WSO) designated stroke a public health emergency in 2010 to stop the rising trend in mortality and disability caused by inadequate public awareness and equitable access to diagnosis and treatment for all. According to estimates, deaths and disabilities from strokes cost 11 crores 60 lakh potential years of life in 2016.

World Stroke Day 2022: Theme

The World Stroke Day Theme for 2022 is “#Precioustime,” which was decided by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) to promote the World Stroke Day awareness and support campaign to speed up the previous year’s 2021 campaign “Minutes Can Save Lives.” This year’s theme continues to inspire and educate people about the importance of stroke signs and symptoms and getting an early diagnosis to avoid complications. The theme also fights for and appeals to other organizations and communities to support better facilities and provide opportunities for stroke sufferers to receive treatment as soon as possible.
