World Red Cross Day 2023: History
World Red Cross Day was established on May 8, 1948, in honor of Henry Dunant’s birthday. The Tokyo Proposal, which was studied by the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS) in 1946, was adopted two years later, resulting in the creation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The proposal recommended that World Red Cross Day be commemorated annually. Over time, the official title of the event evolved, with “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” being officially adopted in 1984.
