World Rabies Day 2022: Every year World Rabies Day is observed all around the world on the 28th of September. The day is celebrated to create awareness regarding Rabies and its prevention. Dogs are the most common animals affected by rabies all around the world. More than 99 percent of rabies in humans is caused by dog bites. World Rabies Day is also marked to pay tribute to the famous French Chemist and microbiologist, Louis Pasteur who died on 28th September 1895. He invented the first effective Rabies vaccine in the world. An idea to celebrate World Rabies Day was brought by Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC). The main aim to observe this day was to fight against one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world known as Rabies. The World Health Organization(WHO) supported the objective of GARC. The first World Rabies Day was commemorated on 28th September 2007. Since then each year World Rabies Day is being celebrated on this particular day.

World Rabies Day is commemorated to spread awareness among the public regarding the dangers of the disease and ways to prevent it. All the necessary equipments such as vaccines, medicines are available for treatment of Rabies. Still people have failed and it is estimated that the 60,000 deaths occur in a year due to Rabies. On World Rabies Day Governments, NGOs, and people from all over the world come together. Event is organized by GARC to educate people regarding the appropriate steps taken to eliminate rabies in people and domestic animals.

The Theme for World Rabies Day 2022 is “Rabies: One Health, Zero Death”. This year’s theme highlights the connection of the environment with both people and animals. The target is to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030 at the global level.
