In 1874, Universal Postal Union(UPU) was formed in Bern, Switzerland. Through the establishment of UPU, a revolution was seen in worldwide communication as people got access to write letters all across the globe. It is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunication Union(ITU). To remember and mark the anniversary of UPU, World Post Day is being celebrated. UPU became an agency of the United Nations in 1948. In 1969, Universal Postal Union Congress was held in Tokyo, Japan where it was first decided to observe World Post Day. In India National Postal Week is marked from October 9 to October 15.

World Post Day 2022: Significance

World Post Day is commemorated to aware public the importance of postal system. The work of the postal workers are also valued and respected on World Post Day. Sending of letters has decreased as now people mostly convey their messages through e-mails. At present the postal services play a key role in delivering parcels worldwide. More than 150 countries show their participation in different events on World Post Day. In several countries, there is a working holiday on this particular day. Various events such as introduction of new postal products and services, exhibition on special stamp collection, open days at post offices, mail centres, and postal museums, and workshops on postal history are organized. Many employees who render their service in this field are rewarded for their magnificent work on World Post Day. For the young generation international letter writing competition is conducted on this day.
