World Physical Therapy Day 2022: History

World Confederation for Physical Therapy(WCPT) was established on September 8, 1951. WCPT announced the celebration of World Physical Therapy Day on 8th September 1996. To commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of WCPT  8th of September was decided to celebrate as World Physical Therapy Day. Hippocrates is regarded as the old master of medicine because the first report on physical therapy was brought by him. In 460 B.C Hippocrates originated the ideas of manual tricks for pain treatment. Physical Therapy has progressed since then from a simple massage to a complex portfolio of therapies. At present various specialized applications have been implemented in Physiotherapy. To provide medical facilities to the athletes Per Henrik Ling, the Father of Swedish Gymnastics settled Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics(RCIG) in 1813. Physical Therapists were granted an official registration by Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare in 1887.

In 1952 Physiotherapy was first initiated in India. World Health Organization(WHO) along with the Government of India began the first physiotherapy center in Mumbai.
