World No Tobacco Day 2022: All around the world every year the 31st of May is celebrated as World No Tobacco Day. World No Tobacco Day is an annual celebration organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is also known as Anti-Tobacco Day. The main aim of celebrating World No Tobacco Day is to focus on the risk associated with the use of tobacco and alarm the public. Tobacco products cause harm not only to people but also to the communities and the environment.

The main goal of WHO is to spread awareness about the perils associated with the use of tobacco and how we can make the world Tobacco free. The WHO informs the public on the risks of using tobacco, business practices that the tobacco companies do to promote their product, and what the organization is doing to fight against the use of tobacco. Around 6 million people die from tobacco related illness every year and by 2030 the number is expected to rise over 8 million. In 1987, the Member States of The World Health Organization (WHO) started World No Tobacco Day to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. World Health Assembly on 15th May 1987 passed a resolution in which 7th April 1988 was decided to be the World No Smoking Day. This particular date was chosen because this day was the 40th anniversary of the World Health Organization( WHO). In 1988 another resolution was passed and it was decided that every year 31st May will be observed as World No Tobacco Day/ Anti-Tobacco Day.

World No Tobacco Day 2022: Significance

On 31st May every year, WHO and its global partners celebrate World No Tobacco Day. The annual celebration is to raise awareness about the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco usage and second hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. Respiratory disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, and other lung diseases are mainly caused due to the intake of tobacco. Tobacco also has its impact on the cardiovascular health of people and it is one of the leading causes of Cardiovascular Disease. WHO banned any kind of advertisement or promotion of tobacco in 2008. Campaigns are held on this day so that government and policy makers make and follow strict rules regarding the use of tobacco.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2022 is “Protect the Environment”. Every year World No Tobacco Day/ Anti tobacco Day is celebrated with a particular theme. The theme focuses on a specific issue related to the tobacco and its industry. World No Tobacco Day 2022 theme highlights how tobacco pollutes the earth and damages people’s health throughout its whole life cycle. Our environment is being degraded which we can completely examine as the first source of plastic pollution in the world is through discarded cigarette butts.
