The World NGO Day is celebrated on the 27th of February of every year. The day serves a very important purpose in honouring and recognizing the contributions that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) around the world have made in making the world a better place and helping so many lives. World NGO Day has a different theme every year. The official theme of the World NGO Day for the year 2025 is announced to be “Empowering Grassroots Movements for a Sustainable Future”. The theme means that helping local groups of people take action is key to creating a world that’s good for everyone, now and in the future.  

History of The World NGO Day

The idea of World NGO Day was first introduced by Marcis Liors Skadmanis in 2009, who is a Latvian social entrepreneur. He proposed the idea after seeing the significant impact NGOs were having in his country and beyond. He wanted to create a global platform to honour the work of NGOs, raise awareness about their contributions, and encourage individuals, communities, and governments to support their efforts.

This day was officially established in 2010 by the 12 member countries of the Baltic Sea NGO Forum, which is recognized as a partner of the Council of the Baltic Sea States. However, it was internationally recognized only in 2014 when it was acknowledged by the European Union, the United Nations, and other global organizations.
