In Geneva, the member states of the United Nations united to establish the International Maritime Organization(IMO) after the end of the second world War in 1948. IMO was built to regulate and provide a framework for maritime shipping at the global level. At present, the IMO has 175 member states and 3 associate members. The first World Maritime Day was marked on 17th March 1978.

World Maritime Day is commemorated to highlight The significance of Maritime industry and the hard work done by the seafarers, service agents, and marine officials. The work they do is really a challenging one as they serve by being away from home for a long period of time. On World Maritime Day events and campaigns are organized by different countries to raise awareness among the public. Measures need to be taken to build and sustain a better maritime industry in the post pandemic era. The World Maritime Day Parallel Event will be organized in Durban, South Africa from 12th to 14th October 2022.
