World Malaria Day 2023
World Malaria Day (WMD) is a global observance that takes place annually on April 25th. It serves as a reminder of the worldwide initiatives being undertaken to combat malaria, a debilitating disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing efforts to control malaria and promoting action to minimize the toll of suffering and mortality caused by this preventable disease. The article below has all the information on World Malaria Day 2023.
World Malaria Day 2023: History
World Malaria Day has its origin in Africa. African Malaria Day was initially established in 2008 by African governments to promote progress in the global effort to combat malaria. Similar events were in vogue since 2001 with the goal of controlling malaria in Africa. World Health Organization (WHO) during the 60th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2007 proposed to transform Africa Malaria Day into “World Malaria Day” to raise awareness about malaria’s global prevalence and to encourage action against the disease. This change aimed to foster a sense of solidarity among nations in addressing the pervasive issue of malaria worldwide.
World Malaria Day 2023: Theme
The theme for World Malaria Day 2023 is “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement.” This theme underscores the critical need to take action and utilize the available tools and strategies to reach those in need. The call to action is to invest in resources, including financial, human, and infrastructural, to support malaria control efforts, to innovate by exploring new approaches and solutions, and to implement effective interventions to eliminate malaria.
