Sergio Vieira de Mello who was working as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was killed due to the bombing in the Canal Hotel in Iraq. Other 20 members who were the staffs of the hotel were also killed because of the bombing. Sergio Vieira Mello has also worked for various political and humanitarian events of UN.

After the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello his foundation was discovered who put abundant efforts to make the level of his working shine. The General Assembly has drafted a resolution with the processing of Switzerland, France, Japan and Brazil ambassadors to observing the day.
