So a Resolution was passed in 1985 to observe World Habitat Day by the United Nations General Assembly. It was decided that the first Monday of October will be marked as World Habitat Day. The first World Habitat Day was hosted by Nairobi, Kenya in 1986. Since then the day is being celebrated every year.
In 1989, “The Habitat Scroll of Honor award”, the most prestigious human settlement award in the world was announced by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. The main idea to bring this award was to acknowledge the magnificent contributions of the people in providing homes to the homeless and upgrading the quality of urban life and human settlement.
World Habitat Day 2022: Significance
Each and every individual on this planet has the basic right to shelter. World Habitat Day is commemorated to make people aware that every person on this earth deserves a decent home. The inequality has grown in the cities and there are problems for the settlement of humans because of which the United Nations has mentioned the triple Cs: Coronavirus (COVID-19), Climate, and Crisis. The progress that has been made against poverty has got hindered due to these triple Cs. Urban poverty and inequality have been confronted as an urgent global priority by the UN. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) actions need to be taken at the local level. World Habitat Day 2022 will be commemorated globally on October 3 in Balikesir, Turkiye.
