Today, June 15th, 2024, marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an annual global initiative aimed at raising consciousness about the plight of elderly individuals who are subjected to abuse and mistreatment. This day serves as a reminder to communities worldwide to develop a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic factors that contribute to the neglect and abuse of senior citizens.

Established in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) aims to shed light on the critical issue of elder abuse. The United Nations General Assembly, through its resolution 66/127, designated June 15th as the day dedicated to raising global awareness and expressing opposition to any form of abuse against the elderly population.

Elder abuse remains one of the most underreported and understudied forms of violence, often overlooked in national action plans. The National Center on Elder Abuse has identified seven distinct categories of elder abuse, highlighting the multifaceted nature of this issue and the need for a comprehensive approach to address it.

The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2024 is “Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies” drawing attention to the vulnerabilities faced by the elderly population during times of crisis and emergencies. Current research indicates that adult children and other family members are often the primary perpetrators of elder abuse, highlighting the unfortunate reality that violence against the elderly frequently occurs within the confines of their own homes. Psychological and financial strains on families have been identified as potential contributing factors to the occurrence of elder abuse.

Exposure to such acts of aggression within the family can have detrimental effects on young children witnessing or experiencing it firsthand. Studies have shown that children exposed to violence, either as direct victims or witnesses, are more susceptible to developing behavioral issues and may subsequently become perpetrators of aggressive and violent behavior themselves. This cycle of violence underscores the urgency of addressing elder abuse not only for the well-being of the elderly but also for the healthy development of future generations.

• In 1978, SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) was established, focusing on advocacy and services for LGBT elders.
• The first comprehensive book addressing elder abuse, titled “Abuse and Maltreatment of the Elderly: Causes and Interventions,” was published in 1983, shedding light on this critical issue.
• The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) was established in 1988 by the U.S. Administration on Aging, serving as a dedicated resource for addressing elder abuse.
• In 2003, a group of professors at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) pioneered the nation’s first-ever Elder Abuse Forensic Center, furthering research and efforts to combat this form of mistreatment.
• The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) initiated the commemoration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June 2006, and subsequently, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized this day in December 2011 by passing resolution 66/127.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a dedicated occasion to educate and raise awareness about the various forms of injustice and mistreatment that elderly individuals face globally, whether it be verbal, physical, or emotional abuse. In many cultures, elders are revered and respected for their wealth of life experiences, cherished memories, and invaluable perspectives that can impart valuable lessons to younger generations. Failing to encourage and provide opportunities for the elderly to share their accumulated knowledge and skills can result in a significant loss for society as a whole.

Research indicates that 4 to 6 percent of the elderly population suffer from some form of abuse, with a majority of cases going unreported. This day serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and focused on the well-being of our elders, ensuring that they lead lives characterized by high quality and dignity. It is a call to action to acknowledge and address the challenges faced by the elderly community, fostering an environment of respect, compassion, and inclusivity.
