World Day Against Child Labor 2022: 12th June is marked as the World Day Against Child Labor all over the globe. To create awareness among the people to prevent child labor, World Day Against Child Labor is celebrated. International Labor Organization (ILO), a body of the United Nations first started the World Day Against Child Labor also known as Anti Child Labor Day in 2002. World Day Against Child Labor 2022: History
United Nations in 1919 formed the International Labor Organization (ILO) and 137 states were members of ILO. The main aim of ILO was to establish International Labor Standards and promote Social Justice among the people. Since then International Labor Organization(ILO) focuses on improving labor conditions all over the world by sanctioning many agreements. In 1973, ILO approved Convention Number 138 which mainly fascinated on the minimum age for work. The main aim was to raise the minimum employment age and banish child labor. In 2002, The International Labor Organization started World Day Against Child Labor and since then Anti Child Labor Day is being celebrated on 12th June.
World Day Against Child Labor 2022: Significance
World Day Against Child Labor is mainly focused on the development of children and supports the rights of the children to education and dignified existence. As a result, achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 is critical. World Day Against Child Labor is celebrated to raise awareness about the worldwide problem of child labor and what methods we can adopt to prevent it. The children who are forced to do child labor all across the world undergo many physical and emotional consequences. Each individual can use their sources and design their own methods to abolish child labor completely. Several organizations, such as the ILO, are working together to eradicate child labor but this is not enough as every individual is responsible to banish child labor. A child who performs child labor is not able to enjoy their childhood as they are loaded with a bunch of responsibilities and they come to learn about their potential and self-worth at an early age.
World Day Against Child Labor 2022: Theme
The 2022 theme for World Day Against Child Labor is “Universal Social Protection to end Child Labor”. To prevent children from child labor and built social protection floors increased investment is required in social protection systems and schemes. Over the last two decades, a significant process has been made in reducing child labor. Over time progress has slowed and even hindered during the period from 2016-2020. Today, 160 million children are still involved in child labor in which some are even as young as 5. To fight poverty and vulnerability and abolish child labor Government social protection systems are required. In times of crisis Social protection is both a human right and a potent policy tool to prevent families from turning to child labor. Only 46.9 percent of the global population as of 2020 and before the COVID-19 crisis was effectively covered by at least one social protection benefit while the remaining 53.1 percent – as many as 4.1 billion people – were left totally unprotected. The Coverage for children is even lower than this as almost three-quarters of children 1.5 billion did not receive social protection. Increased investment in universal social protection systems is required to end child labor and this can become the integrated and comprehensive approach to cover up the problem.
