The first celebration took place on October 7, 1926, which was Cervantes’ birthday, before it was later moved to April 23, his date of death, in 1930. This tradition continues to be widely popular in Catalonia, where it is known as Sant Jordi’s Day or The Day of Books and Roses.
In 1995, UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, designated April 23 as the official date for World Book and Copyright Day. This date also marks the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth or death of other prominent authors.
