In 1920 the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was adopted. Secretary of the State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation in which the American women were sanctioned the constitutional right to vote. The law prohibits the citizens of the United States from denying them the right to vote on the basis of gender. The first Women’s Equality Day was observed in 1972. A proclamation is announced every year for Women’s Equality Day by the President of the United States. The first official proclamation was issued by President Richard Nixon, the 37th US President. After that every year the current President of the United States issues an order in which August 26 is designated as Women’s Equality Day.

  • August 26, 2022 will be marked as the 102nd anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
  • On the 50th anniversary of the nineteenth amendment held on August 26, 1970 the National Organisation for Women (NOW) organized “strike for equality,” a nationwide demonstration by women to get equal rights.
