The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS 2017

Example: The Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) grouping unequivocally named Pakistan-based groups — Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) — as terror organisations, removing a key irritant in ties between New Delhi and Beijing and stepping up the fight against global extremism.

1. Unequivocally [uhn-i-kwiv-uh-klee] 
Adverb: in a way that is clear and unambiguous; in a way that is not subject to conditions or exceptions.
Synonyms: clearly, determinedly, distinctly, downright, positively, really, terribly, unmistakably, emphatically, absolutely, bloody, by all means, decisively, flat out, for a fact, in spades, no catch.
Antonym: doubtfully.

Example: Analysts say the BRICS declaration underscores a shift in China’s position on hyphenating its ties with India with its relationship with Pakistan.

2. Underscore [verb uhn-der-skawr] 
Verb: to mark with a line or lines underneath; underline, as for emphasis; to stress; emphasize.
Noun: a line drawn beneath something written or printed; music for a film soundtrack; background for a film or stage production.
Synonyms: accentuate, highlight, indicate, mark, stress, accent, caption, feature, italicize.

3. Hyphenate [verb hahy-fuh-neyt; adjective, noun hahy-fuh-nit, -neyt] 
Verb: to join by a hyphen; to write or divide with a hyphen.
Adjective: of or relating to something of distinct form or origin that has been joined; connected by a hyphen.
Noun: a person working or excelling in more than one craft or occupation.

Example: The joint statement, without exception, also deplored “all terrorist attacks worldwide,” including attacks in BRICS countries.

4. Deplore [dih-plawr, -plohr] 
Verb: to regret deeply or strongly; lament; to disapprove of; censure; to feel or express deep grief for or in regard to.
Synonyms: abhor, bemoan, complain, denounce, lament, mourn, bewail, censure, cry, deprecate, hate, hurt, moan, repent, rue.
Antonyms: approve, be happy, commend, compliment.

Example:  Predatory journals most often do not peer-review manuscripts and are more focussed on article fees.

5. Peer review
Noun: evaluation of a person’s work or performance by a group of people in the same occupation, profession, or industry.

Example: Additional Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, for the Centre, remained non-committal on Monday when the two Rohingyas who moved the court tried to draw an assurance that the government would not move against their community or take “coercive steps.”

6. Coercive [koh-ur-siv] 
Adjective: serving or tending to coerce.
Synonyms: bullying, violent, forced, forceful, intimidating.

Example: In its probe, the district administration found that from July 21 to August 20, 30 children “appeared to have” died in the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) ward of the hospital due to “perinatal asphyxia.” 

7. Perinatal [per-uh-neyt-l] 
Adjective: occurring during or pertaining to the phase surrounding the time of birth, from the twentieth week of gestation to the twenty-eighth day of newborn life.

8. Asphyxia [as-fik-see-uh] 
Noun: the extreme condition caused by lack of oxygen and excess of carbon dioxide in the blood, produced by interference with respiration or insufficient oxygen in the air; suffocation.
Synonyms: coma, slumber, trance, amazement, anesthesia, apathy, bewilderment, dullness, hebetude, hypnosis, inertia, inertness, insensibility, languor, lassitude, lethargy, narcosis.
Antonyms: consciousness, wakefulness, activity, interest.

Example: The BJP walks a tightrope in Assam to reconcile its wider agenda with subnational aspirations.

9. Tightrope [tahyt-rohp] 
Noun: a rope or wire cable, stretched tight, on which acrobats perform feats of balancing, a tough situation.
Verb: to walk, move, or proceed on or as on a tightrope; to make (one’s way, course, etc.) on or as on a tightrope.

10. Reconcile [rek-uh n-sahyl] 
Verb: to cause (a person) to accept or be resigned to something not desired; to win over to friendliness; cause to become amicable; to compose or settle (a quarrel, dispute, etc.); to bring into agreement or harmony; make compatible or consistent.
Synonyms: accommodate, appease, assuage, conform, coordinate, harmonize, integrate, pacify, placate, rectify, resolve, reunite, accord, accustom, arbitrate, arrange, attune, compose.
Antonyms: agitate, fight, incite, irritate.
