Vijay Diwas also known as Victory day is celebrated on 16th December every year to commemorate India’s Victory over Pakistan and to pay homage to Indian Armed forces for their spirit, courage and sacrifices. 48 Years ago, thousands of Pakistani member troop raised white flag and finally surrender themselves to Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, which resulted in end of Indo-Pak war 1971. This war was a result of Bangladesh liberation war, when it was looking for freedom from Pakistan.
The end of this war also resulted in the unilateral unquestioning surrender of the Pakistan Army and subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
What Happened on 1971, 16th December?
This is the day when Pakistan Army in East Bengal surrendered before Lt. Gen. J.S. Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, in 1971. A new nation was born once a struggle that lasted after a long time however a couple of months and had its roots within the Pakistan election of Dec 1970.
Although it was a great day for Bangladesh as it meant the secession of East Pakistan in to the country however this win also was a proud moment for Indian Army. After all, It was the first war after World War II that we had won conclusively.
As per ritual in India, Defence Minister and the heads of the Indian Army, the Navy and the Air Force gathered at India Gate in Delhi, to pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the war at Amar Jawan Jyoti today.
On 16 December every year, Citizens, senior officials, students & war veterans lay wreaths and remember the sacrifices of the soldiers to pay tribute to them.
