UNDP Human Development Index 2021-22: India drops one spot to 132

UNDP Human Development Index 2021-22, India drops one spot to 132: In the Human Development Index (HDI) 2021, India is ranked 132 out of 191 nations. According to the report, the current fall in the Human Development Index is largely due to a decrease in life expectancy around the world, which fell from 72.8 years in 2019 to 71.4 years in 2021. The decline is consistent with the global trend after the COVID-19 pandemic, during which 90% of the nations have experienced a decline in human progress.

UNDP Human Development Index 2021-22: India drops one spot to 132

  • In 2020, with an HDI score of 0.642, India was placed at the 130th rank. Last year India ranked 131 in the Human Development Index (HDI) and this year in the 2021-22 report, India’s rank has slipped to 132 out of 191 countries. For 2021-22, India has an HDI score of 0.633, which places it in the category of medium human development and is lower than its score of 0.645 from the previous year. This fall in its score across two consecutive years happened for the first time in thirty years and indicates a reversal in progress.
  • Many countries along with India have seen a decline in their human development performance, as a result of several crises like COVID-19, the Ukraine conflict, and environmental issues (record-breaking temperatures, fires, storms, and floods) showing that human progress has stagnated for the first time in 32 years. All of these factors are causing a cost of living crisis that is being felt on a global scale, creating a picture of uncertain times and unsettling lifestyles.
  • According to the report, people will be able to thrive in the face of uncertainty with the help of policies that emphasize on 3Is (investment from renewable energy to preparedness for pandemics; insurance including social protection; and innovation).

India’s Position

  • According to the report, India’s HDI value exceeds South Asia’s average human development. As a result of the policies taken up by India in these years along with the investments made in health and education,  India’s HDI value is progressively catching up to the worldwide average, reflecting a faster rate of advancement in human development than the rest of the world.
  • India is closing the gender disparity in human development quicker than the rest of the globe. The environment has suffered less as a result of this development. In order to ensure that no one is left behind, India has made investments in inclusive growth, social protection, gender-responsive policies, and a drive toward renewable energy. India led the largest immunization campaign in the world through Co-WIN, providing social security for the most disadvantaged. India is a global leader in these fields.
