Example: State government insisted that the five persons killed on Tuesday during the farmers’ agitation did not die in police firing.
1. Agitation [aj-i-tey-shuh n]
Noun: the act or process of agitating; state of being agitated (to disturb or excite emotionally); persistent urging of a political or social cause or theory before the public.
Synonyms: disturbance, turbulence, turmoil, unrest, upheaval, commotion.
Antonyms: calm, harmony, order, peace, tranquility.
Example: Mr. Chouhan blamed the Congress for “politicising the protests and instigating violence.”
2. Instigate [in-sti-geyt]
Verb: to cause by incitement; foment; to urge, provoke, or incite to some action or course.
Synonyms: abet, bring about, foment, incite, inflame, initiate, kindle.
Antonyms: deter, discourage, dissuade, halt, neglect, put out.
Example: Meanwhile, farmers resorted to violence and arson in western Madhya Pradesh, despite prohibitory measures.
3. Arson [ahr-suh n]
Noun: Law. the malicious burning of another’s house or property, or in some statutes, the burning of one’s own house or property, as to collect insurance.
Synonyms: torching, firing, incendiarism, pyromania, setting fire, touching off.
Example: Gunmen and suicide bombers attacked Iran’s Parliament and the shrine of its revolutionary leader on Wednesday, killing at least 12 persons, wounding dozens and igniting an hours-long siege at the legislature that ended with four attackers dead.
4. Shrine [shrahyn]
Noun: a building or other shelter, often of a stately or sumptuous character, enclosing the remains or relics of a saint or other holy person and forming an object of religious veneration and pilgrimage; any place or object hallowed by its history or associations.
Synonyms: altar, chapel, church, holy place, mausoleum, sanctuary.
5. Ignite [ig-nahyt]
Verb: to set on fire; kindle.
Synonyms: burn, flare up, inflame, kindle, enkindle, fire.
Antonyms: cool, extinguish, put out, quench, dull.
6. Siege [seej]
Noun: the act or process of surrounding and attacking a fortified place in such a way as to isolate it from help and supplies, for the purpose of lessening the resistance of the defenders and thereby making capture possible; any prolonged or persistent effort to overcome resistance.
Synonyms: annoy, bedevil, beset, plague, badger, blockade.
Antonyms: aid, make happy, please, assist, help.
Example: The attacks began mid-morning when assailants armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed the Parliament building.
7. Assailant [uh-sey-luh nt]
Noun: a person who attacks.
Adjective: Archaic. assailing; attacking; hostile.
Synonyms: aggressor, mugger, antagonist, assaulter, bushwhacker, enemy.
Antonyms: ally, friend.
Example: RBI’s decision to hold interest rates reveals rift with Centre MPC declined Finance Ministry invite.
8. Rift [rift]
Noun: an opening made by splitting, cleaving, etc.; fissure; cleft; chink; an open space, as in a forest or cloud mass, or a clear interval; a break in friendly relations.
Synonyms: breach, fissure, flaw, gap, split, chink.
Antonyms: closure, closing, continuation, solid, agreement, concordance.
Example: However, after citing a couple of caveats relating to food and fuel prices, and core inflation, the RBI projected headline inflation to be in the 2.0-3.5% range for the first half of the current fiscal year and 3.5-4.5% in the second half.
9. Cite [sahyt]
Verb: to quote (a passage, book, author, etc.), especially as an authority; to mention in support, proof, or confirmation; refer to as an example; to summon officially or authoritatively to appear in court; to call to mind; recall.
Synonyms: allege, allude to, indicate, mention, name, offer, point out.
Antonyms: conceal, deny, take, withhold, forget, insert.
10. Caveat [kav-ee-aht, -at, kah-vee-, key-]
Noun: a warning or caution; admonition; Law. a legal notice to a court or public officer to suspend a certain proceeding until the notifier is given a hearing.
Synonyms: admonition, alarm, caution, forewarning, monition, sign.
