Example: Cabinet to consider proposal for outright sale of Air India.

1. Outright [adjective out-rahyt; adverb out-rahyt, -rahyt] Adjective: complete or total; downright or unqualified; without further payments due, restrictions, or qualifications.
Adverb: completely; entirely; without restraint, reserve, or concealment; openly.
Synonyms: absolute, downright, pure, unequivocal, unmitigated, utter, wholesale, all.
Antonyms: imperfect, indefinite, mixed, partial, uncertain, ambiguous, conditional.


Example: The Union Cabinet will soon decide the fate of the state-owned carrier Air India by deliberating on three options to divest the government’s majority stake and consider the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to get rid of a major portion of its more than 50,000-crore debt.

2. Divest [dih-vest, dahy-] Verb: to strip of clothing, ornament, etc.; to strip or deprive (someone or something), especially of property or rights; dispossess; to rid of or free from; Law. to take away or alienate (property, rights, etc.).
Synonyms: bankrupt, deprive, dismantle, rob, unload, bare, bereave, bleed, denudate, denude.
Antonyms: give, offer, clothe, cover, hide, hold, keep, maintain.

3. Stake [steyk] Noun: something that is wagered in a game, race, or contest; a monetary or commercial interest, investment, share, or involvement in something, as in hope of gain; a personal or emotional concern, interest, involvement, or share; the funds with which a gambler operates.
Synonyms: award, interest, involvement, prize, purse, claim, concern.

Example: Amber Dubey, partner and India head of aerospace and defence at global consultancy KPMG advised that the Centre should lease Air India’s assets to an SPV “while keeping the assets and liabilities in the books of the Air India; 74-100% equity of the SPV can be sold to the highest bidder from the private sector.”

4. Lease [lees] Noun: a contract renting land, buildings, etc., to another; a contract or instrument conveying property to another for a specified period or for a period determinable at the will of either lessor or lessee in consideration of rent or other compensation; the property leased; the period of time for which a lease is made.
Synonyms: charter, hire, rent out, sublet, let, loan, sublease.
Antonym: sell.


5. Liability [lahy-uh-bil-i-tee] Noun: moneys owed; debts or pecuniary obligations (opposed to assets ); Accounting. liabilities as detailed on a balance sheet, especially in relation to assets and capital; something disadvantageous.
Synonyms: accountability, burden, culpability, debt, duty, obligation, amenability, amenableness, blame.
Antonyms: asset, irresponsibility, unaccountability.

Example: The pathology of lynching.

6. Lynch [linch] Verb: to put to death, especially by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority.
Synonyms: execution, capital punishment, mob justice, stringing up, the gallows, vigilante justice.

Example: “This may require a detailed analysis of the legalities involved and concurrence of lenders,” Mr. Dubey said.

7. Concurrence [kuh n-kur-uh ns, -kuhr-] Noun: the act of concurring; accordance in opinion; agreement; cooperation, as of agents or causes; combined action or effort; simultaneous occurrence; coincidence.
Synonyms: unanimity, simultaneity, synchroneity, synchronism.

Example: The Hotel Corporation of India (which owns Centaur Hotels) is another subsidiary while it has a joint venture AISATS.

8. Venture [ven-cher] Noun: an undertaking involving uncertainty as to the outcome, especially a risky or dangerous one; a business enterprise or speculation in which something is risked in the hope of profit; a commercial or other speculation; the money, ship, cargo, merchandise, or the like, on which risk is taken in a business enterprise or speculation.
Synonyms: deal, endeavor, enterprise, experiment, investment, project, undertaking, adventure.
Antonyms: idleness, assurance, certainty, factinaction, protection, reality, safety, surety.

Example: Documents available with The Hindu suggest that a partner of the gutkha manufacturer – which markets the MDM brand of the product – corroborated that the money was paid out to them.

9. Corroborate [verb kuh-rob-uh-reyt; adjective kuh-rob-er-it] Verb: to make more certain; confirm.
Synonyms: authenticate, confirm, justify, substantiate, validate, verify, approve, certify, document, endorse, establish.
Antonyms: disprove, invalidate, veto, contradict, deny, disagree, disapprove.

Example: Both Secretaries reiterated the Trump administration’s “strong desire to consolidate the gains made in the multidimensional ties,” MEA spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

10. Reiterate [ree-it-uh-reyt] Verb: to say or do again or repeatedly; repeat, often excessively.
Synonyms: echo, renew, repeat, restate, ditto, double-check.
Antonym: take back.
