1. Ambit [am-bit]
Noun: circumference; circuit; boundary; limit; a sphere of operation or influence; range; scope.
Synonyms: boundary, bounds, compass, extension, range, scope, space, sphere
Example: Oil companies will have to take a collective hit of about Rs 25,000 crore a year after the roll-out of the goods and services tax since most of their output is outside the ambit of the new system.
2. Ultracrepidarian [uhl-truh-krep-i-dair-ee-uh n]
Adjective: noting or pertaining to a person who criticizes, judges, or gives advice outside the area of his or her expertise.
Noun: an ultracrepidarian person.
Example: The play provides a classic, simplistic portrayal of an ultracrepidarian mother-in-law.
3. Interim [ɪnt(ə)rɪm]
Noun: the intervening time.
Adjective: in or for the intervening period; provisional.
Adverb: meanwhile.
Synonyms: provisional, temporary, pro tem, stopgap, short-term, fill-in, caretaker, acting, intervening, transitional, changeover, make-do, makeshift, improvised.
Antonyms: finished, permanent, continual
Example: It is important to note that the ICJ’s order is a limited interim order.
4. Euphoria [yoo-fawr-ee-uh, -fohr-]
Noun: a state of intense happiness and self-confidence
Synonyms: elation, exhilaration, frenzy, glee, joy, jubilation, relaxation, bliss, dreamland, ecstasy.
Antonyms: depression, discouragement, sadness, sorrow, unhappiness, dislike, misery, despair, woe.
Example: The euphoria over the verdict appears to be misplaced.
5. Rogue [rohg]
Noun: a dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel, a playfully mischievous person; scamp
Adjective: (of an animal) having an abnormally savage or unpredictable disposition, as a rogue elephant; no longer obedient, belonging, or accepted and hence not controllable or answerable; renegade
Synonyms: con artist, crook, swindler, villain, blackguard, charlatan, cheat, cheater, criminal, defrauder, devil, fraud.
Example: Pakistan has been acknowledged to be a rogue state that attaches no significance to such verdicts.
6. Respite [res-pit]
Noun: a delay or cessation for a time, especially of anything distressing or trying; an interval of relief:
to toil without respite, temporary suspension of the execution of a person condemned to death; reprieve.
Verb (used with object): to relieve temporarily, especially from anything distressing or trying; give an interval of relief from, to grant delay in the carrying out of (a punishment, obligation, etc.)
Synonyms: breather, breathing space, downtime, hiatus, interruption, layoff, letup, lull, recess, relaxation, relief, reprieve.
Antonyms: continuation, advance, beginning, blame, censure, commencement, employment.
Example: While the ICJ’s view on the matter has come as a respite for the beleaguered Jadhav, he is still not out of the woods.
7. Accolade [ak-uh-leyd, -lahd; ak-uh-leyd, -lahd]
Noun: any award, honour, or laudatory notice, a light touch on the shoulder with the flat side of the sword or formerly by an embrace, done in the ceremony of conferring knighthood, the ceremony itself.
Synonyms: distinction, kudos, approval, award, badge, decoration, honor, laurels.
Example: Election Commission is earning accolades worldwide for conducting elections successfully and smoothly.
8. Reprieve [ri-preev]
Verb (used with object): to delay the impending punishment or sentence of (a condemned person),
to relieve temporarily from any evil.
Noun: a respite from impending punishment, as from execution of a sentence of death, a warrant authorizing this, any respite or temporary relief.
Synonyms: abatement, absolution, amnesty, clemency, deferment, pardon, postponement, remission, respite, suspension, truce.
Antonym: continuation
Example: With Pune in charge for most of the chase, the reprieve for Rahane could have proved costly, the placid-faced Pune batsman dispatching Johnson to the Mumbai dugout, as if to rub it in.
9. Throttle [throt-l]
Noun: a lever, pedal, handle, etc., for controlling or manipulating a throttle valve.
Verb (used with object): to stop the breath of by compressing the throat; strangle, to choke or suffocate in any way, to compress by fastening something tightly around, to silence or check as if by choking.
Idioms (at full throttle): at maximum speed.
Synonyms: burke, control, gag, inhibit, silence, smother, stifle, strangle, strangulate, suppress.
Antonyms: encourage, free.
Example: Throttled thus in the first two overs, Parthiv grew restless and reckless too.
10. Fondle [fon-dl]
Verb (used with object): to handle or touch lovingly, affectionately, or tenderly; caress.
Synonyms: caress, grope, clutch, cosset, cuddle, dandle, embrace, feel, grab, hug.
Antonyms: disbelieve, let go, push away, release.
Example: They attempted to fondle the animal.
