Meaning: not harmful or offensive.
synonyms: harmless, safe, non-dangerous, non-poisonous, non-toxic, non-irritant, non-injurious, innocent;
Example: The claim that something as innocuous as the number of MPhil students that a university teacher is allowed to supervise will determine the future of research in Indian universities must seem far fetched.
Meaning: the process of taking in and fully understanding information or ideas.
Example: “the assimilation of the knowledge of the Greeks”
Example: This is a common requirement because in India master’s level courses do not involve original research — they emphasise the assimilation and reproduction of existing knowledge.
3.Parity (noun)
Meaning: the state or condition of being equal, especially as regards status or pay.
Example: “parity of incomes between rural workers and those in industrial occupations”
synonyms: equality, equivalence, uniformity, sameness, consistency, correspondence, congruity, congruence, levelness, unity, parallelism, evenness
Example: Moreover, women from all these groups are also present in numbers large enough to approach parity with men (official figures for 2015-16 place the share of female enrolment at 46.2%).
4.Unprecedented (adjective)
Meaning: never done or known before.
synonyms:unparalleled, unequalled, unmatched, unrivalled, without parallel, without equal;
Example: Even more unprecedented is the fact that this kind of diverse student body is found not just at the lowest rungs of higher education but also at the top.
5.Poised (adjective)
Meaning: having a composed and self-assured manner.
synonyms: self-possessed, self-assured, composed, assured, self-controlled, cool-headed, calm, cool, cool, calm, and collected, at ease, tranquil, serene, unperturbed, unruffled, impassive, nonchalant, confident, self-confident, dignified, equable, imperturbable, suave, urbane, elegant;
Example: Indian higher education is poised to produce new generations of students at all levels, including young researchers from hitherto under- or un-represented groups who can expand and transform the knowledge base of society.
6.Inexplicably (adverb)
Meaning: in a way that cannot be explained or accounted for.
Example: Surprisingly and inexplicably, the 2016 guidelines now say that an assistant professor can have just one MPhil and four PhD students;
7.Cohort (noun)
Meaning: an ancient Roman military unit, comprising six centuries, equal to one tenth of a legion.
synonyms: unit, outfit, force;
Example: Keeping in mind that the MPhil is a two-year degree, with supervisors being allotted during the course of the first year itself, these guidelines amount to cutting down on student intake every other year, leading to unviably small cohorts at best.
8.Imbibe (verb)
Meaning: absorb or assimilate (ideas or knowledge).
synonyms: assimilate, absorb, soak up, take in, digest, ingest, drink in, learn, acquire, grasp, gain, pick up, familiarize oneself with
Example: Given the transformation in the student body with more and more first generation students making it to this level, there is an acute need for adequate training in undertaking research, including more inventive and rigorous ways of imbibing research methodologies.
9.Unviable (adjective)
Meaning: not capable of working successfully; not feasible.
Example: But the precise opposite is being made to happen. MPhil classes will turn unviable because of low numbers.
10.Fraught (adjective)
Meaning: (of a situation or course of action) filled with (something undesirable).
synonyms: full of, filled with, swarming with, rife with, thick with, bristling with, charged with, loaded with, brimful of, brimming with;
Example: Pakistan’s sudden announcement on Monday that former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav has been sentenced to death by a Field General Court Martial is a development fraught with danger.
