The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS RRB 2017

Example: The Allahabad High Court on Thursday acquitted dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar and quashed their conviction in the 2008 murder of their teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj in Noida.

1. Quash [kwosh] 
Verb: to put down or suppress completely; quell; subdue; to make void, annul, or set aside (a law, indictment, decision, etc.).
Synonyms: crush, put down, quell, repress, squash, suppress, annihilate, beat, extinguish, extirpate, overcome, overthrow, quench, scrunch, squish, subdue, trash, snow under.
Antonyms: build up, compliment, encourage, let go.

Example: Accepting the argument of counsel for the Talwars that the case against them was based entirely on circumstantial evidence, the court also said the chain of evidence as presented by the CBI was inconclusive.

2. Inconclusive [in-kuh n-kloo-siv] 
Adjective: not conclusive; not resolving fully all doubts or questions; without final results or outcome.
Synonyms: ambiguous, deficient, incomplete, uncertain, unconvincing, uneventful, unsatisfactory, unsettled, vague, indecisive, indeterminate, lacking, open, undecided, unfateful, unfinished.
Antonyms: adequate, certain, clear, definite.

Example: Underlying Ambedkar’s crusade to annihilate caste was a fundamental desire for freedom.

3. Annihilate [uh-nahy-uh-leyt] 
Verb: to reduce to utter ruin or nonexistence; destroy utterly; to destroy the collective existence or main body of; wipe out; to annul; make void; to cancel the effect of; nullify.
Synonyms: crush, decimate, demolish, eradicate, exterminate, extinguish, finish off, liquidate, negate, obliterate, quell, raze, wipe out, abate, abolish, abrogate, annul.
Antonyms: bear, build, construct, create.

Example: It struck me that the house memorialises not just another passage in Ambedkar’s early life, but rather, his profound desire for freedom.

4. Strike [strahyk] 
Verb: to deal a blow or stroke to (a person or thing), as with the fist, a weapon, or a hammer; hit; to inflict, deliver, or deal (a blow, stroke, attack, etc.); to drive so as to cause impact.
Synonyms: beat, collide, crash, drive, force, knock, pummel, punch, smack, touch, bang, bash, bonk, box, buffet, chastise, clash, clobber, clout, conk.
Antonyms: surrender, lose, miss, not touch.

Example: Closer home, the Tamil novelist Perumal Murugan, hounded by right-wing critics for writing about his own Gounder community, has penned a number of poems.

5. Hound [hound] 
Noun: one of any of several breeds of dogs trained to pursue game either by sight or by scent, especially one with a long face and large drooping ears.
Verb: to hunt or track with hounds, or as a hound does; pursue; to pursue or harass without respite; to incite (a hound) to pursuit or attack; urge on.
Synonyms: annoy, bother, goad, harass, heckle, hector, persecute, pester, pursue, bait, bug, chivy, curdle, dog, drive, harry, hassle, hunt, impel.
Antonyms: aid, help, ignore, make happy.

Example: In a decision revealing a keen and canny aesthetic imagination, Murugan has gifted his poems to the Carnatic vocalist T.M. Krishna, who has been tuning and releasing them of late.

6. Canny [kan-ee] 
Adjective: careful; cautious; prudent; astute; shrewd; knowing; sagacious; skilled; expert; frugal; thrifty.
Synonyms: adroit, astute, cagey, cautious, discreet, frugal, ingenious, intelligent, judicious, prudent, shrewd, skillful, sly, subtle, wise, able, acute, careful.
Antonyms: awkward, careless, foolish, hasty.

Example: He takes comfort in nature and verse as he experiences alienation and injustice from his fellow caste-members and their bellicose backers in the Hindu Right.

7. Verse [vurs] 
Noun: (not in technical use) a stanza; a succession of metrical feet written, printed, or orally composed as one line; one of the lines of a poem; a particular type of metrical line.
Adjective: of, relating to, or written in verse.
Verb: versify.
Synonyms: ballad, epic, jingle, lyric, poem, poetry, rhyme, sonnet, stanza.
Antonym: prose.

8. Alienation [eyl-yuh-ney-shuh n, ey-lee-uh-] 
Noun: the act of alienating, or of causing someone to become indifferent or hostile; the state of being alienated, withdrawn, or isolated from the objective world, as through indifference or disaffection.
Synonyms: disaffection, estrangement, indifference, separation, breach, coolness, division, divorce, remoteness, rupture, variance, withdrawal.
Antonyms: agreement, connection, charm, endearment.

9. Bellicose [bel-i-kohs] 
Adjective: inclined or eager to fight; aggressively hostile; belligerent; pugnacious.
Synonyms: antagonistic, combative, threatening, aggressive, argumentative, battleful, hostile, pugnacious, quarrelsome, warlike, warring.
Antonyms: agreeable, calm, easygoing, pacific.

10. Backer [bak-er] 
Noun: a person who supports or aids a person, cause, enterprise, etc.; a person who bets on a competitor in a race or contest; canvas or other material used for backing.
Synonyms: advocate, ally, benefactor, endorser, follower, patron, promoter, sponsor, angel, champion, money, protagonist, underwriter, well-wisher, grubstaker, meal ticket.
Antonyms: antagonist, enemy, opponent, opposition.
