मनुष्य के लिए अपना अतीत सदैव सम्मोहक रहता है. जब मनुष्य का मन अतीत की स्मृतियों में ज्यादा रम जाता है, तो वर्तमान से उसका सम्बन्ध टूट जाता है. मानव-विकास के लिए यह कोई शुभ स्थिति नहीं है इसलिए अतीत के सम्मोहन से निकलकर वर्तमान में लौटना आवश्यक है. मनुष्य जीवन में यश, वैभव, मान, संपत्ति को ही अपना लक्ष्य मानकर उनके पीछे भागता रहता है. उन्हें पाने की कोशिश में वह कभी संघर्ष करता है और कभी समझौते भी करता है, किन्तु एक स्थिति पर आकर उसे यह अनुभव होता है कि जिसके पीछे वह भाग रहा है, उसमें कोई सारतत्व नहीं है. जीवन के संघर्षों और कष्टों से घबराकर जब वह ईश्वर की शरण में जाता है, तो वहाँ भी उसे शान्ति नहीं मिलती सुख न तो भौतिक सुख-सुविधाओं में है और न ही ईश्वर की शरण में, सुख तथा दुःख का सम्बन्ध मनुष्य की अपनी चेतना से है. जैसे शुद्ध चाँदनी जैसा कुछ नहीं है, चाँदनी के साथ-साथ रात का भी अस्तित्व है, उसी प्रकार इस संसार में शुद्ध सुख जैसी कोई स्थिति नहीं है. जीवन के इस कटु यथार्थ को स्वीकार करके ही मनुष्य आगे बढ़ सकता है. यथार्थ से पलायन उचित नहीं है.
