Sadbhavana Diwas 2020: Every year on 20th August, the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi is celebrated as Sadbhavana Diwas or Harmony Day. This year on 20th August 2020, we are going to celebrate the 76th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The close family members of Rajiv Gandhi, senior Congress party members lay down garlands on Veer Bhoomi in the early morning to pay homage to the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Indian National Congress instituted Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award in 1992, a year after his death. 

What is the significance of celebrating Sadbhavana Diwas? 

Every year this day is celebrated in the memory of the late Rajiv Gandhi who was the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 40 years. In lieu of paying tribute to his vision for India, on this occasion contribution to society betterments are made. 

He always had a dream of a developed nation for which he did many deeds including the National Education Policy in 1986, reduced Licence Raj, and included Panchayati Raj. He was the one whose contribution to the development of the nation is benefiting us at present. For remembering his dreams, his social and economic work for taking the nation towards development, Sadbhavana Diwas came into existence.

How Sadbhavana Diwas will be celebrated on 20 August 2020?

Due to the pandemic and lockdown, forming rallies cannot be possible. The Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant will layoff garlands on the portrait of late Rajiv Gandhi and will administer the ‘Sadbhavana Pledge’. Keeping the safety and social distancing in mind, this year schools and colleges will be conducting events online where students can participate by staying at home.   

How Indians celebrated Sadbhavana Diwas till last year? 

As the family members pay tribute to Veer Bhoomi, the citizens of India to celebrate this day. On the auspicious occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas, various creative and enthusiastic programs are organized in different parts of the country with a motive of Go Green. Indians plant more trees on this day in their surroundings, and the main focus is provided to the greenery theme in the programs. 

In schools and colleges, this day is celebrated with speeches about how to keep nature neat and clean to eliminate pollution. Various plays, painting competitions, debate competitions, and singing competitions are held on this day. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and pleasure to keep people aware of the critical environmental issues and preventive measures to keep our nation growing forward. The students, staff, and everyone took a pledge for the betterment of India.

What is the Sadbhavana Pledge? 

On the occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas, every Indian takes a pledge every year so that the dreams Rajiv  Gandhi once had could come true as we move forward to brighter and better tomorrow. The pledge is something like “I take this solemn pledge that I will work for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of the nation regardless of caste, religion, language, or region. I further pledge that I shall resolve all differences among us through dialogue and constitutional means without resorting to violence.”

A little about Rajiv Gandhi- 

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister at an age of 40 years after the assassination of his mother Indra Gandhi and served from 1984-89. To modernize the education system he came up with a National Education Policy in 1986 and he founded Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya System where he provided free residential education to rural sections from classes 6 to 12.
