Q13. A cistern, when full, is emptied by a waste pipe in 30 minutes, but if a tap (filling source) is opened, it takes 40 minutes, to empty the cistern. How long the cistern will take to become full when only filling pipe is working?

140 minutes
120 minutes
160 minutes
180 minutes
150 minutes
Solution:

Let waste pipe be A and filling pipe be B.
‘A’ alone can empty the cistern = 30 minutes
If B is also opened = – A + B can empty = 40 minutes
LCM of (30, 40) = 120
Efficiency of A = 120/30 = 4
Efficiency of A – B = 120/40 = 3
So, efficiency of B = 4 – 3 = 1
So, B alone can fill the cistern = 120/1 = 120 minutes
