Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana: All About Coronavirus Relief Package

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana: In this pandemic scenario, the most affected are the poor and daily wage workers. They would have no backup or saving on tending to their regular necessities in the time of crisis, apart from generous volunteers among citizens, celebrities, and others. The government has been working on initiatives wherein they can ease the lives of the poor who are unable to sustain themselves during the lockdown, one such big announcement was made on  26 March by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana with Rs. 1.70 Lakh crore plan.

The poor who earned very little before the lockdown has nothing to rely upon, they cannot go out and make their living because of the shutdown; this has impacted their struggles for food and other amenities. The government has realized how it can affect a significant part of the population, which is poor and ones that live below the poverty line. Hence worked hard to roll out schemes to help the needy in times of humanitarian crisis.

The finance minister has worked out a package under the Garib Kalyan Yojana so that they can facilitate help to

  • Urban poor
  • Rural poor
  • Migrant workers
  • Women in the lower-income bracket

The schemes that are proposed are as follows:

Medical insurance of Rs.50 lac which will benefit 20 lac people

  • Paramedics
  • Nurses
  • ASHA workers
  • Other health care workers

In the next three months 80 crore people will get free 

  • 5kg rice/wheat (in addition to the 5Kg they already receive)
  • 1kg of dal of their choice

In the Jana Dhan yojana– Rs. 2000/- each for 8.69 crore farmer’s accounts (beginning from April 1)

In the MNREGA scheme Rs.2000/- an additional income to the daily wage workers for five crore workers

Scheme for will be given Rs.1000/- offered in two installments, which will benefit three crores, poor people

  • Senior citizens
  • Widows
  • Disabled

204 million women Jan Dhan account holders will get Rs 500 per month for the next three months.

The Ujjwala scheme gets extended to free of cost cylinders to BPL families for the next three months. It will benefit 8.3 crore people

Women self-help groups will be able to apply for collateral-free loans and Rs10 upfront and a total of Rs.20 lakh helping seven crore households in the country.

The EPFO scheme has been amended because of the pandemic, which will allow 75% non-refundable advance of the amount paid to the worker of the three months wages whichever is lower.

The government will contribute to the EPF to both the employer and employee at the rate of 24% for the next three months for 90 % of workers who earn less than Rs.15000/ month. This scheme is for establishments which employ up to 100 workers.

Construction worker’s funds of Rs.31000 crore will get used for the registered workers who work is disrupted because of the lockdown.

The states have got directions to use the District Minerals Fund for: 

  • Medical testing
  • Screening activities
  • Preventive measures to stop the spread of the virus

These eight separate measures will help tide over the crises, a lot of the industries have praised the efforts of the finance minister for checking the impact of sudden helplessness poor people faced in the times of coronavirus lockdown.
