National Technology Day is celebrated on May 11 every year to acknowledge the contributions made by researchers, engineers, and scientists to the technology industry. In today’s world, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, and the impact it has on the economic growth of a nation cannot be ignored. National Technology Day 2023: History

In India, 11th May holds immense historical significance as it marks National Technology Day. The day commemorates several monumental achievements in the field of technology that India accomplished on the same date. Notably, on 11th May 1998, India became the sixth country to test nuclear weapons and joined the elite group of nuclear powers. The successful nuclear test was conducted at the Pokhran test range in Rajasthan under Operation Shakti, which was led by the late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, an eminent aerospace scientist who later served as India’s President.

Additionally, 11th May witnessed the successful test of Hansa-3, India’s first indigenous aircraft designed for pilot training, surveillance, and reconnaissance purposes, in Bangalore. The day also saw the successful test firing of the Trishul surface-to-air missile. In recognition of these technological advancements, the Indian government declared 11th May as National Technology Day in 1999, and it was signed by the then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Thus, National Technology Day is an important day to honor the contributions of researchers, engineers, and scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of technology.

The significance of National Technology Day is further amplified by the fact that several historic achievements in the technology industry in India occurred on this day. Decades ago, India became one of the few countries in the world to possess nuclear weapons, successfully tested its first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3, and accomplished the test firing of the Trishul missile, all on May 11.
