National Technology Day 2022: Every year May 11 is celebrated as National Technology Day to honor the contributions of researchers, engineers, and scientists of our community. In today’s era technology plays an important role in our daily lives and when we consider its impact on economic growth National Technology Day becomes very crucial. Decades earlier on this day technology industry in India achieved several monumental achievements as our country entered into the small group of countries that hold nuclear weapons, India tested its first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 and the successful test firing of the Trishul missile was done on this day itself.

National Technology Day 2022: History

11 May, National Technology Day has a very significant historical importance in India. On 11 May 1998, India successfully tested nuclear weapons in Pokhran and entered into a small group of countries that have nuclear weapons. India became the sixth country to join the Nuclear Club. On this day our country carried out a nuclear test at the army’s Pokhran test range in Rajasthan which was successful. Two more nuclear tests were conducted on May 13 and these three nuclear tests were under Operation Shakti. Operation Shakti was led by the late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, an aerospace Scientist who went on to become India’s eleventh President. India on May 18, 1974, conducted its first nuclear test under the code-named “Smiling Buddha” in Rajasthan’s Pokhran and these tests were the second occurrence.

On 11 May 1998, India tested its first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 which was meant for pilot training, surveillance, and reconnaissance purposes in Bangalore. Successful test firing of surface-to-air missile, Trishul was also performed on the same day. 11th May was declared as National Technology Day by the Indian government as many technological advancements were accomplished on the same day itself. Officially it was signed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was the Prime Minister then and the first National Technology Day was celebrated in 1999.

National Technology Day 2022: Significance

National Technology Day is celebrated to honor the scientists, engineers, researchers, and their technological innovations which have added to the growth of India. At the center level Department of Science and Technology’s statutory body Technology Development Board(TDB) celebrates the day by honoring the technological innovations which have contributed to the national growth. Every year on this day the board organizes an event where the President of India gives awards to people for their technological contributions. The main emphasis of honoring the scientists, engineers, and researchers is to emphasize the importance of science and technology in our daily lives and how the young generation should pursue it in their profession. Many students believe Science to be a difficult topic for their further studies. Workshops and Seminars are also held on National Technology Day.

The theme for National Technology Day 2022 is “Integrated Approach in Science and technology for sustainable future“. The theme for 2022 was launched by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. Since 1999, Technology Development Board (TDB) has been organizing webinars on different science and technology-related topics.
