Dr. S Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888. To mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice-President of India, and India’s second President Teacher’s Day is celebrated. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a philosopher, scholar, politician, and teacher. On his 77th Birthday, September 5, 1962, the first National Teachers’ Day was observed. He started his career as a teacher and worked his entire life to impart education. He was also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna Award.

On 5th September 1966, the International Labor Organization (ILO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a recommendation about the status of teachers. The proposal of 1997 that addressed the condition of teaching members in higher education was added to the 1966 recommendation.
