In 2007 the first National Statistics Day was observed to honor the Indian-based scientist and statistician Professor P C Mahalanobis. National Statistics Day 2022: History

On 29th June,2007 the first National Statistics Day was celebrated in India. The birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis falls on this particular date so to convey regards the Indian Government decided to celebrate 29th June as National Statistics Day. Prof. P C Mahalanobis has made enormous contributions in the field of economic planning and statistical development. Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis first started with a Statistical Laboratory which later was established as the Indian Statistical Institute in 1931. He is also known as the Father of Indian Statistics.
