The Ministry of Panchayati Raj observes 24th April as National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) every year to commemorate the constitutional status accorded to the Panchayati Raj system in the country. The objective of celebrating National Panchayati Raj Day is to raise awareness about Panchayats and Gram Sabhas, which are institutions mandated by the Constitution for local self-governance in rural areas. The day also aims to highlight the roles, responsibilities, achievements, concerns, and resolutions of Panchayats and Gram Sabhas, and motivate them to continue their efforts towards rural development. National Panchayati Raj Day 2023: History
Rajasthan holds the distinction of being the first state in India to implement the Panchayati Raj System in 1959, under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The official recognition of this system came in the form of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, which was passed on 24th April 1993.
In 1957, a committee was established under the leadership of Balwantrai Mehta to deliberate on the evolution of Panchayati Raj in India. The committee’s recommendation was the establishment of a three-tiered Panchayati Raj system, comprising of Gram Panchayats at the Village level, Panchayat Samitis at the Block level, and Zila Parishads at the District level. After deliberation for years and recommendations of many other committees like – Ashok Mehta Committee, Gadgil Committee, L M Singhvi Committee etc the Panchayati Raj was given constitutional status through 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993.

According to recent data, there are a total of 2.51 lakh Panchayats in India, consisting of 2.39 lakh Gram Panchayats, 6904 Block Panchayats, and 589 District Panchayats. These Panchayats are supported by over 29 lakh Panchayat representatives who work towards the development and welfare of their respective areas. Here is the significance of Panchayats.
