National Panchayati Raj Day 2022: Ministry of Panchayati Raj observes 24th April as National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) every year to celebrate the constitutional status accorded to the Panchayati Raj system in the country. This occasion provides an opportunity for direct dialogue with Panchayat representatives from all over the country as well as recognizing their achievements to empower and motivate them. The objective of celebrating the National Panchayati Raj Day is to increase awareness about Panchayats and Gram Sabhas, the institutions of the local self-governments for the rural areas mandated by the Constitution, and also about their roles, responsibilities, achievements, concerns, resolutions etc.

National Panchayati Raj Day 2022: History

Now let’s have a look at the history of National Panchayati Raj Day. A committee was formed in 1957 to focus on the evolution of Panchayati Raj in the country. The chairman of the committee was Balwantrai Mehta. The committee in its report recommended a decentralized three-layered Panchayati Raj system – Gram Panchayat at the Village level, Panchayat Samiti at the Block level, and Zila Parishad at the District level. The mission of the Panchayati Raj system is to empower, enable and establish accountable Panchayati Raj institutions to ensure inclusive development and efficient delivery of services along with social justice.

National Panchayati Raj Day 2022: Significance

Every year we celebrate Panchayati Raj day on the 24th April because of the 73rd Constitution Amendment Act, 1992. The passing of the 73rd Constitution Amendment Act, 1992 came into force with effect on 24 April 1993. Through the Panchayati system, it seems that every village, block, and district has a separate head to run the administration of that particular territory. A separate Ministry of Panchayati Raj was constituted on 27th May 2004, in order to supervise Panchayati Raj System in India. Since 24th April 2010, we are regularly celebrating the National Panchayati Raj day.
