National Maritime Day 2024
India, being a peninsular nation with a vast coastline of 7517 km (including 6100 km of mainland coastline) and has a rich maritime heritage that dates back centuries of trade and travel. To commemorate the nation’s vibrant maritime domain and honour the maritime workforce we (India) celebrate National Maritime Day every year on 05th April. This year we are celebrating the 61st National Maritime Day. Let’s explore its theme, history and why it is celebrated.
National Maritime Day 2024: Theme
The theme for National Maritime Day 2024 is “Sustainable Maritime Sector: Charting the Course for Green Growth“, the celebrations are organised by its Nodal Authority i.e. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. The theme echoes the effort to promote environmental sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of the maritime industry.
History of National Maritime Day
- On 04 April 1964, National Maritime Day was observed for the first time in India. Earlier sea routes were in the Jurisdiction of the British Government.
- In 1919, on this day, the maiden voyage of the first Indian Vessel “S. S. Loylty” from Bombay (now Mumbai) to London.

Why is National Maritime Day Celebrated?
National Maritime Day is observed to recognise the contribution of seafarers and services of organisations and persons connected with the promotion and development of the national maritime industry by honouring them with awards, scholarships and facilitations.
- Honouring Maritime Workforce: It is a day to express gratitude and appreciation by giving awards such as Sagar Samman Varuna Award, Sagar Samman for Gallantry, Recognition of outstanding Indian Port, Recognition of outstanding Indian Employer of Safarer, etc.
- Promoting Maritime Careers: The event provides an opportunity to inspire and encourage the youth to explore rewarding careers in the maritime industry.
- Raising Awareness: National Maritime Day holds significant importance aiming to increase public awareness about the maritime industry’s immense contributions to the Indian economy, trade & transportation.
