National Forest Martyrs Day 2022: History
In 2013, the Ministry of Environment and Forest officially declared to observe National Forest Martyrs Day on the 11th of September. This particular day was chosen to celebrate as National Forest Martyrs Day because in 1730 the very known Khejarli massacre took place on this day. Maharaja Abhay Singh of Rajasthan required woods for his palace, therefore he ordered the soldiers of his kingdom to cut down the trees in Khejarli village. Khejarli is a village in Rajasthan where the people of the Bishnoi community regard the trees as sacred. People of the village were angry and protested on seeing the trees being cut. It is believed that while the trees were cut a woman named Amrita Devi placed her head in place of the tree. The incident turned out to be a tragedy that got written down in history as Khejarli Massacre. Many people sacrificed their lives to save the trees. The children of Amrita Devi along with more than 350 people were killed by the soldiers of Maharaja Abhay Singh. When the incident became more adverse than the King ordered his soldiers to stop killing the people. He pardoned the people of the Bishnoi Community and proclaimed that no trees will be cut down and not a single animal will be killed in the areas surrounded by the people of Bishnoi Community.
