National Education Day 2022: In honor of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first education minister, National Education Day is celebrated annually on November 11th. It is observed to commemorate the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Minister of Education after independence. The day honors his outstanding contributions to education and institution building. Every educational institution observes National Education Day to raise awareness about the importance of literacy.

National Education Day 2022: History

In 1947, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was elected as India’s first Education Minister. He was also elected to India’s Constituent Assembly, which drafted the country’s constitution. Several measures were implemented during Maulana Azad’s tenure to promote primary and secondary education, scientific education, the establishment of universities, and the promotion of avenues for research and higher education. He was the Education Minister for more than ten years. On November 11, 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birthday to be nationally recognised as Education Day for the first time. The day was set aside to remember Abul Kalam’s role in laying the groundwork for an independent India’s education system, as well as to evaluate and improve the country’s current performance.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

• Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was an Indian independence activist, writer, and senior leader of the Indian National Congress. After India gained independence, he became the country’s first Minister of Education. He was the education minister from August 15, 1947 to February 2, 1958.
• Our first education minister established the University Grant Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
• In 1920, he was elected to the foundation committee to establish Jamia Millia Islamia in Aligarh, UP.
• He also made contributions to the country’s cultural organisations, including the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Sahitya Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, and Sangeet Natak Academy.
