Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyrs’ Day, is observed in India on March 23 every year. Shaheed Diwas: History

Bhagat Singh and his friends Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru became national heroes for their daring adventures. They shouted Inquilab Zindabad and tossed bombs at the Central Legislative Assembly on April 8, 1929. They were taken into custody and accused of killing someone. Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar were executed by hanging on March 23, 1931.

On January 30, 1948, during his evening prayers in the Birla House, Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Gandhiji was a selfless, passionate man who fought for India’s independence, well-being, and progress. He also devoted his life in protection of these principles.

In an attempt to defend his actions, Nathuram Godse held Gandhiji responsible, saying that he was the cause of the nation’s division and the thousands of people who died fighting for independence. He referred to Gandhiji as a fraud and expressed no regret for what he had done. Godse received a death sentence on November 8. Thus, on this day, January 30, Bapu passed away and became a martyr. The day was declared as Shaheed Diwas, or Martyr’s Day, by the Indian government.
