What is Left Handers Day?

This day was first celebrated in 1976 and has become a fun way to celebrate the diversity of left-handed people. It also has raised awareness of the difficulties and struggles that come with living in a predominantly right-handed world. roughly only twelve percent of the world is left-handed That’s why International Left Handers Day is celebrated on 13 August This unique difference in the world’s population because roughly 87% of the population is right-handed.

History of International Left-Handers Day

Before left-handers Day was celebrated for their differences, they were stigmatized. As right-handed people were the world’s majority, left-handers were accused of being possessed by the devil. During the Middle Ages, left-handed people were accused of practicing witchcraft. Children who used their left hand dominantly were punished and forced to write with their right hand. This happened well until the late 20th century. Today, left-handers aren’t as severely punished or stigmatized for their differences.

However, they still encounter difficulties in their day-to-day life, like swiping their credit cards, using scissors, and writing in spiral notebooks. The Left-Handers Club was founded in 1990 with the mission statement to keep members up to date with developments and to serve as a bridge between the views of left-handers and manufacturers. The club also provides help and assistance to those who require it, and they continuously research left-handedness and new items that can offer lefties increased ease of use. Continuing the tradition created by Campbell, the Left-Handers Club launched International Lefthanders Day as a part of their organization on August 13, 1992. The aim was to create awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of left-handedness.
