International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, is celebrated on May 1st every year across the globe. The purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of labour and workers in different countries. The aim is to generate awareness and show solidarity with and amongst labours. International Labour Day 2023: History
The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to 1886 when workers in the United States of America went on strike demanding an 8-hour workday. However, a tragic incident occurred on May 4th in Haymarket Square, Chicago, where a bomb blast killed several people and left many others injured. In honor of the victims and the labour movement’s struggles, the socialist pan-national organization declared May 1st as International Labour Day, which aimed to promote workers’ welfare worldwide.
In India, the first Labour Day or May Day was celebrated in 1923 in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. It was also the first time that the Red Flag, a symbol of Labour Day, was used in India. The day is also known as Kamgar Din or Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas in Hindi, Kamgar Divas in Marathi, and Uzhaipalar Naal in Tamil.

Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated worldwide with the primary aim of acknowledging and appreciating the tireless efforts and commitment of the working class while raising awareness about their rights and safeguarding them from any form of exploitation. In some countries, this day is referred to as Worker’s Day.
