In 1999 first time firefighters day was celebrated when five firefighters died tragically during a wildfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia. They died due to the sudden change in the direction of the wind as the blaze caught them and they died tragically. It is on the 4th of May because this day is Saint Florian’s Day. Saint Florian, who was said to be one of the first firefighters of an actual Roman battalion and saved many lives, is the patron saint of firefighters. Sant Florian saved an entire burning village in Rome. He is the patron saint of chimney sweeps and firefighters. So International Firefighter’s Day is celebrated on 4th May as it is the feast day of Saint Florian.
