International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2022: History

The first meeting of the UN Working Group was held in 1982 on Indigenous Populations. December 10, 1994 was marked as the initiation of the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People by UNGA on 21st December 1993. 1993 was declared as the International Year of the World’s Indigenous People. On December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) passed a resolution 49/214 in which it was decided that August 9 will be marked as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2022: Significance

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated to focus the role of indigenous people and the need to preserve their rights, communities and knowledge they have collected and passed down over the centuries. Approximately 476 million indigenous peoples are residing in the 90 countries of the world. An estimated 7000 languages are spoken by the indigenous people and they also represent 5000 different cultures. Article 24 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples mention the rights of indigenous peoples to the medicines that they follow traditionally. The science, language, spiritual practice, philosophies of indigenous people are need to be preserved as they are very important.

The issues of Indigenous people will be discussed in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) meeting held on 9th August. The meeting will be virtually organized in which Indigenous Peoples, Member States, UN entities, civil society, and the general public are all invited to show their participation.

The theme for International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2022 is ‘The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge”. Indigenous women have a poor representation in the world and they also face various issues such as discrimination and violence. Indigenous women stands as the backbone of the entire communities of indigenous people. They impart a very important role in the preservation and transmission of traditional ancestral knowledge, traditional medicines, food systems and help in conserving their language and cultural heritage.
