International Day of Sign Languages 2022: Every year International Day of Sign Languages is observed worldwide on the 23rd of September. International Day of Sign Languages 2022: History
World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) brought the proposal for the International Day of Sign Languages. WFD is a federation of 135 national associations of deaf people. At the global level, the World Federation of the Deaf represents the human rights of approximately 70 million deaf people. On 19th December 2017, resolution A/RES/72/161 was endorsed by the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations which was co-sponsored by 97 United Nations Member States and accepted by consensus. As a part of the International Week of the Deaf, the International Day of Sign Languages was first observed in 2018. Since then International Day of Sign Languages is marked annually on September 23. In September 1958, the International Week of the Deaf was first celebrated.

International Day of Sign Languages is commemorated to raise awareness among the people regarding the importance of sign languages. The linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and the other people using sign languages must be protected. On International Day of Sign Languages the deaf communities, governments and civil society organizations promote their national sign languages which represents the diversity of their country. Sign language a makes us realize the human rights of the deaf people. The hearing impaired community must have early and quality access to sign languages because it is very important for their growth and development. As the technology is getting advanced certain measures need to be taken for the advancement of sign languages.
