Happy Lohri: Before The Reward, There Must be Labor. You Plant Before You Harvest.

An agricultural festival filled with merry-making, Lohri is celebrated on the 13th of January each year, mainly in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Lohri is associated with worshipping the sun and fire, it observes fertility and the spark of life.

Lohri marks the end of winter season and is a traditional welcome of longer days and sun’s journey to the northern hemisphere by Sikhs and Hindus in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. It is observed the night before Makar Sankranti, also known as Maghi, and according to the solar part of the lunisolar Bikrami calendar and typically falls about the same date every year

Though popular belief has it that Lohri is celebrated to mark the end of peak winter, this festival is traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crops. … And thus, Punjabi farmers see the day after Lohri (Maghi) as the financial New Year.The festival is celebrated with fun and fervor. People lit a bonfire in the evening where they offer sweets to the fire and sing and dance to the Lohri songs.

The festival of Lohri is associated with Dulla Bhatti – robber akin to Robin Hood, who lived in the times of King Akbar. He used to rob the rich people and distribute the spoils to the poor. He also saved the girls who were kidnapped for the slave trade and got them married to decent families and arranged for their dowries. A special thanks are given to him and most songs of Lohri are associated with thanking him for his good deeds.
