This seventh edition updates the existing data series besides expanding the coverage to
incorporate two new sections (Health and Environment) and nine new tables,

(i) State-wise Maternal Mortality Ratio ( under Social and Demographic section);

(ii) State-wise Total Fertility Rate (under Social and Demographic section);

(iii) State-wise Children Aged 6-59 Months Who are Anaemic (under Health section);

(iv) State-wise Pregnant Women Aged 15-49 Years Who are Anaemic (under Health section);

(v) State-wise Cold Storage Capacity ( under Agriculture section);

(vi) State-wise Forest Cover (under Environment section);

(vii) State-wise Tree Cover (under Environment section);

(viii) State-wise Total Installed Capacity of Grid Interactive Renewable Power (under Infrastructure section);

(ix) State-wise Outstanding Guarantees of State Governments (under Fiscal section).

Handbook of Statistics on Indian States has been prepared under the supervision and overall guidance of Dr. Deba Prasad Rath, Principal Adviser, Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR)

What are the important points shared in the report?

  • The macroeconomic outlook is positive in the current fiscal. However, India is still impacted by global headwinds.
  • Total offices of Scheduled Commercial Banks: 154758
  • Karnataka has the highest total installed capacity of grid-interactive renewable power among all states. It had total installed capacity of 15,463 megawatts (MW).
  • Daily wagers in Kerala earned way more than their counterparts in more industrialised states like Gujarat and Maharashtra and earned more than double the national average of Rs 373.30. 
  • Amongst all states, Tamil Nadu retains the top spot with the maximum number of factories including micro, small and mid-sized units.
  • Himachal Pradesh is the worst off among Indian states. The pensions burden, which consumed almost half the state’s own tax revenues in 2004-05, has ballooned to eat away more than three-fourths of its own tax revenues (OTR)in 2020-21.
  • Health specialists such as surgeons, obstetrician and gynaecologists, and physicians are awfully short of requirement of state community health centres (CHC), showed data from the Reserve Bank of India recently.As many as 79.90 per cent of the requirements were unfulfilled at these centres in 2021 compared to 76.09 per cent in 2020. The two years were hit by Covid-19 waves.
