Ganesh Chaturthi 2020: Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day long festival which begins in the month of Bhadra as per the Hindu calendar and according to the Gregorian calendar, it falls in the mid-month of August/September. This year, the 10-day celebration will begin on 22nd August, Saturday. People bought Lord Ganesha to their homes, worship them, serve them, and by chanting Ganpati Bappa Morya bids them goodbye on the last day of celebration. This festival was initially celebrated in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh with great joy and enthusiasm, however now the festivities and devotees have spread around. Ganesh Chaturthi is now celebrated across the country with the same devotion and respect.

What are the Puja rituals for Ganesh Chaturthi?

The 10-day festival begins with the welcome of Lord Ganesha’s statues in the homes and establishing them in the right places. People also place big statues of Lord Ganesha in pandals at public places and worship these statues for 10 continuous days. People offer fruits, flowers, Modak, ladoos to him during these days to get his blessings. The festival ends on the 10th day when people take the statue of Lord Ganesha to nearby water-bodies and bid him goodbyes with the promise of returning back next year. People immerse him in the water and chants Ganpati Bappa Morya patriotically.

What is the significance of this festival?

Lord Ganesha is known as the symbol of wisdom, prosperity, new beginning, good fortune and the destroyer of inner evils. With all such qualities, he is also called by the name Vighnaharta and the day of Ganesh Chaturthi is also named as Vinayaka Chavithi or Vinayaka Chaturthi. People believe that Bappa visits the homes of his devotees, stays there for some days and blesses them with good luck, wisdom, fortune, and prosperity before he takes leave with a promise to return back the next year. The people across the country celebrate this festival of Ganesh Chaturthi with respect and enthusiasm.  

How people celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 10-day festival will be celebrated with proper precautionary measures including social distancing, wearing gloves, and masks when out in the public. The Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a one-ward-one-Ganpati concept to maintain social distancing during the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony to prevent spread of the disease. Public celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi are barred in New Delhi this year in the lieu of pandemic effect. 

Artists had already started making the idols of Lord Ganesha since many days with the ingredients that do not pollute our oceans. These idols of Lord Ganesha are bought by the people to their homes and puja will be performed in the evening time with the chanting of Ganesh’s stories and mantras distribution of ladoos or modaks as the prasad. The main highlights in the Ganesh puja are Durva grass, Arka flowers, and modakam, which are the Lord Ganesha’s favorite and offered him during the worship. this routine will be followed for the next 10-days and on 1st September, people would send him off asking him to visit again. 

What’s special in this Ganesh Chaturthi? 

This year a special combination of planets has been observed after a long period of 126 years and that too on Ganesh Chaturthi. As per these combinations, the two planets, Sun, and Mars have been situated in their respective places and this could be very auspicious and special for some zodiac signs
