Directions (11-15): In the following questions eight (8) sentences are given which may or may not be in sequence. Read the sentence and rearrange themselves to make a coherent paragraph.
A. Suicide victims like painters Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Rothko, novelists Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway, and poets Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath all offer prime examples.
B. Indeed, the notion that creative genius might have some touch of madness goes back to Plato and Aristotle.
C. Even ignoring those great creators who did not kill themselves in a fit of deep depression, it remains easy to list persons who endured well-documented psychopathology.
D. Instances such as these have led many to suppose that creativity and psychopathology are intimately related.
E. Creative geniuses who have succumbed to alcoholism or other addictions are also legion.
F. But some recent psychologists argue that the whole idea is a pure hoax.

Sol. The correct sequence to arrange the sentence properly and meaningfully is BCDA. The expression “India’s standing as a credible regional player has risen in the eyes of” gives a contextual meaning to the sentence. Hence option (b) is the correct choice.
“Post-Doklam, India’s standing as a credible regional player has risen in the eyes of the South-east Asian leaders as, indeed, in regions farther afield.”

Sol. The correct sequence to arrange the sentence properly and meaningfully is ADCB. It is to be noted that the expression “The unprecedented participation of 10 heads of ASEAN governments” gives a meaningful sense to the sentence which when followed by the parts D, C and B respectively make the sentence meaningful. Hence option (a) is the correct choice.

Sol. The given statement doesn’t require any rearrangement as it already gives a contextual meaning to the sentence. The expression “would always elude Asean is unanimity in its approach to China” gives the required structure to the sentence. Hence the correct sequence is ABCD.

(iii) Use ‘than’ in place of ‘when’ as after ‘No sooner’ the conjunction we use is ‘than’.

Sol. Only (ii) is grammatically incorrect.
(ii)- ‘to’ will not be used after ‘both’ as block is a ‘transitive verb’ which directly takes the object.

Sol. (i) Use ‘since we have been living’ instead of ‘Since we are living’ because of the use of ‘for five years’ as ‘for/since+ time’ is generally used in present continuous tense.
(ii)- Generally following structure is used:
‘No sooner+ did+ subject+ verb’
Or
‘No sooner+ had + subject+ verb’
Therefore ‘No sooner had she agreed’ will be used in place of ‘No sooner has she agreed’
(iii)- Use ‘has’ in place of ‘have’ as the subject of the sentence “The increasing mechanization” is singular and therefore singular verb is required.

Adverse means harmful or unfavorable.
Averse refers to feelings of dislike or opposition.
