284th Sant Sevalal Maharaj’s birth anniversary

  • Sant Sevalal Maharaj, a spiritual and religious figurehead of the Banjara community, was born 284 years ago on February 26, marking the beginning of a yearlong remembrance.
  • Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, and Meenakshi Lekhi, the Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Culture, led the festivities in New Delhi.
  • Sant Sevalal Maharaj was born on February 15, 1739, in Surgondankoppa, in the Shivamogga region of Karnataka.
  • He is regarded by the Banjara community as a social reformer and spiritual guide.

2. Britain, EU reach agreement on Northern Ireland post-Brexit trade

  • The Britain and the European Union(EU) agreed on a new trading arrangement for Northern Ireland, a move aimed at ending years of friction caused by Brexit and allowing greater cooperation between both sides at a time of mounting geopolitical risk to Europe from Russia’s war in Ukraine.
  • The U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen meet in Windsor, near the royal castle here, to shake hands on a new agreement that allows British goods destined for Northern Ireland to enter without customs checks, while creating a separate process for goods going to Ireland through the province.
  • The deal also gives the Northern Ireland assembly the power to ask the U.K. government to veto new EU regulations or laws that would apply to the province.

3. Pakistan Govt raises policy interest rate by 200 bps for IMF Bailout

  • Amid the severe economic crisis, Pakistan’s government has decided to raise the policy rate to 19 per cent or 200 basis points, which will be an increase of 2 per cent. Currently, it stands at 17 per cent.
  • The increase is based on rates the government set in the auction to raise domestic debt. This will push the interest rate to 19%, just below the previous record of 19.5% set in October 1996.
  • With the new decision, the Pakistan government has accepted another pre-condition of the IMF for the release of USD 1.1 billion in critical funding, a part of the USD 6.5 billion bailout package.

4. Japan to invest ₹7,200 crores in Uttar Pradesh, HMI Group is developing 30 hotels in the state

  • Japan’s eminent hospitality group Hotel Management International Company Limited (HMI) will be opening 30 new properties across Uttar Pradesh.
  • The company has signed an MoU with the UP government to invest Rs 7200 crore at the UP Global Investors Summit.
  • Addressing a session on Japan as a partner to UP’s growth, Takamoto Yokoyama, Director, Public Relations, HMI Group, which operates more than 60 hotels in major cities of Japan, said that  “After the development of Shrikashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor in Varanasi, a large number of tourists are coming here. This is a favourable opportunity for us to invest in this state as the hospitality industry is growing big.

5. Kerala temple become India’s first to induct robotic elephant for ritual duties

  • The Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in Kerala‘s Thrissur district has become the first in the country to use a mechanical, lifelike elephant for temple rituals.
  • The temple priests performed ‘Nadayiruthal’ or ceremonial offering to the deity, of Irinjadappilly Raman, a magnificent, lifelike mechanical or “robotic” elephant. Irinjadappilly Raman has been gifted to the temple by animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India with the support of award-winning Indian film actor Parvathy Thiruvothu.
  • ‘Irinjadappilly Raman’ will help conduct ceremonies at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free manner and thereby support real elephants’ rehabilitation and life in forests, ending the horror of captivity for them.

6. Assam CM unveiled North East’s 1st compressed biogas plant

North East’s 1st compressed biogas plant in Assam

  • The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the first-ever compressed biogas plant project in northeast India took place at Domora Pathar in Sonapur under the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, and the chief guest was chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The plant, which is being built by businessmen Pankaj Gogoi and Rakesh Doley under the name Redlemon Technologies, is expected to begin operating in November 2023 and will have a 5 tonne-per-day production capacity for compressed biogas from raw materials like municipal solid wastes and cattle manure.
  • The Sonapur compressed biogas plant would significantly contribute to the Assam government’s goal of making a gradual transition to cleaner and greener energy.

Direct benefit transfers total Rs 5.5 trillion so far in FY23

  • The amount of various subsidies and sops transferred to recipients through direct benefit transfer (DBT) has reached almost Rs 5.5 trillion so far in the current fiscal year, FY23, almost on par with FY21‘s total and falling just 13% shy of FY22’s total achievement.
  • The DBT transfers are anticipated to surpass the Rs 6.3 trillion attained in FY22 because to the large number of dues that are paid in the final month of the year.
  • While input costs and fertilizer prices almost doubled in just a year, farmers have received fertiliser subsidies totaling Rs 1.9 trillion so far this fiscal year, which is 53% more than the total of Rs 1.24 trillion in FY22.

8. Services exports to cross USD 300 billion this fiscal: Piyush Goyal

  • The country’s services exports are doing “extremely well” and going by the current trend these outbound shipments would register about 20 per cent growth in this fiscal and cross the USD 300 billion target despite global economic uncertainties, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said.
  • During April-December 2022-23, overall exports rose 9 per cent to USD 332.76 billion while imports increased 24.96 per cent to USD 551.7 billion.
  • According to the data of the commerce ministry, the estimated value of services export in April-December 2022 is USD 235.81 billion as compared to USD 184.65 billion in the year-ago period. In 2021-22, these exports touched an all-time high of USD 254 billion.

9. Air India’s order for 470 jets at list price of $70 bn

  • Tata group-owned Air India’s order for a record 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing Co will be at a list price of $70 billion, Chief Executive Campbell Wilson said, as the airline seeks opportunities to expand in long-haul international.
  • Air India had, earlier this month, announced provisional deals for 220 planes from Boeing and 250 from Airbus in an order that would eclipse previous records for an order by a single carrier.
  • The airline plans to fund the order with a combination of resources, including internal cash flow, shareholder equity and sale-and-leaseback of aircraft, Wilson told reporters at a press conference.

RBL Bank signs an agreement with Exim Bank

  • RBL Bank, the private lender said that it has reached an agreement with Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim Bank) under the Trade Assistance Programme (TAP) in order to facilitate cross-border commercial operations.
  • Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim Banktrade’s) assistance programme for cross-border transactions intends to facilitate India’s exports globally by providing credit enhancement to trade instruments.
  • India Exim Bank will open new trade channels with the participating foreign banks and institutions in emerging countries through the programme.
  • The TAP’s credit upgrades for trade instruments will encourage the mobilisation of trade financing and strengthen aid to Indian exporters.

11. National Science Day 2023 celebrated on 28th February

  • On February 28 each year, National Science Day honours Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman as C.V. Raman, an Indian scientist and physician, for discovering the “Raman Effect.”
  • Every year, it is celebrated to honour the value of science and to serve as a reminder of the influence it has had on humankind’s way of life. In honour of India’s G20 leadership, the event this year has the theme “Global Science for Global Wellness.”
  • Notably: In 1986, the Government of India, under then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, designated February 28 as National Science Day to commemorate the announcement of the discovery of the “Raman Effect”.

12. Pepsi roped in Ranveer Singh as brand ambassador

  • In January, Pepsi had announced that it has roped in Kannada actor Yash as its brand ambassador.
  • A leading female actor could soon join the brand’s summer campaign that Pepsi is running under the “Rise up Baby” theme.
  • Singh, whose brand rankings improved in 2021, had a brand value of $158.3 million according to a Duff & Phelps report. Singh was the second-most valued brand in the rankings after cricketer Virat Kohli. Singh endorses 45 brands.

13. Shailesh Pathak named FICCI Secretary General

  • Former bureaucrat Shailesh Pathak has been appointed as the new Secretary General of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI). He will take over the charge on March 1.
  • In a career spanning 37 years, Pathak has worked with the government as an IAS officer as well as helmed large companies in the private sector.
  • He has an MBA degree from IIM Calcutta in 1986 after graduation. He has completed an LLB and a Diploma in Ornithology. He has scaled a 6831 metre peak in the Himalayas and has trekked extensively.

India joins Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate

  • India has joined a global initiative started by the US and the UAE to boost funding and assistance for the development of climate-smart agriculture and food systems. The two countries together launched the Agricultural Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM4C) in November 2021.
  • On the sidelines of the I2U2 – Israel, India, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates – Business Forum in Abu Dhabi, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dammu Ravi signed a letter stating India’s intention to join the AIM4C.

15. Pilgrim announces first ESOP scheme

  • D2C(Direct to Consumer) personal care brand Pilgrim has announced its first-ever ESOP scheme. It has earmarked 10% of its shares to the ESOP pool for 100% of its employees, it said in a statement.
  • About 30 employees who have spent a year in the company will be able to benefit from this scheme. With this announcement, Pilgrim aims to acknowledge and reward the efforts of the employees who’ve led the brand’s growth over the last 3.5 years, along with driving wealth creation.
  • With a strong focus on employee well-being and hence benefits, Pilgrim has seen its employee-benefit-centric expenses grow 2.5x in the last 12 months. It has also doubled its employee strength in the same time period.

  • In the FIFA Awards vote, Messi had 52 points, Mbappé 44, and Benzema 34. It is the second time that Messi has won the honour inaugurated by FIFA in 2016.
  • Messi was named the winner of the Best FIFA Men’s Player award for his outstanding performances in men’s football from the period of 8 August 2021 to 18 December 2022. Equalling Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski’s massive feat at the FIFA awards.
