1. Rajya Sabha passes Competition Amendment Bill, 2023

• The Rajya Sabha approved the Competition Amendment Bill, 2023, aimed at modernizing the two-decade-old anti-trust law to align with changes in the economy.
• The Competition Amendment Bill, 2023 aims to modify the Competition Act, 2002, which authorizes the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to prevent practices that adversely impact competition and consumer interests.
• The Bill was introduced to Parliament in August 2022 and referred to the Standing Committee on Finance for review.
• The committee submitted its report in December 2022, and the Bill was re-introduced with a few amendments in February 2023.
• The Lok Sabha passed the Bill on March 29.

2. Union Minister Sonowal launches ‘SAGAR-SETU’ mobile app of National Logistics Portal Marine

• The Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, introduced the “Sagar Setu” mobile application for the National Logistics Portal Marine.
• The “Sagar Setu” mobile app by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways offers a login module, service catalogue, Letter of Credit, bank guarantee, certification, and track & trace features.

3. Israel launches new Ofek-13 spy satellite into orbit

• On April 5th, 2023, Israel successfully launched a new spy satellite, named Ofek-13, into orbit.
• The satellite, Ofek-13, launched from the Palmachim Airbase in central Israel, is intended to provide advanced intelligence capabilities to the Israeli military and intelligence agencies.
• The Ofek-13 satellite is the latest addition to Israel’s Ofek series of spy satellites, which have been in operation since 1988.

13. Commonwealth champion weightlifter Sanjita Chanu faces 4-year ban by NADA

• Sanjita Chanu, a weightlifter from India who has won the Commonwealth Games twice, has been banned for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) of India after she tested positive for banned drugs.
• The testing took place during the National Games held in Gujarat in September-October 2022, and the results showed the presence of drostanolone, an anabolic-androgenic steroid prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

14. Banarasi Paan, three other Varanasi-based goods receive GI tag

• On April 3, 2022, the Benarasi Paan, which was featured in Amitabh Bachchan’s famous song “Khaike Paan Benaras Wala,” was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
• This means that these products have unique qualities specific to their respective regions.
• The Benarasi Paan, known for its distinct taste and unique blend of ingredients, has been awarded the GI tag along with three other Varanasi-based products: Banarasi Langda Mango, Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal), and Adamchini Rice.
• The expert Rajinikant, who is a Padma Awardee in GI, has confirmed the designation of these products.
