RBI Initiatives to Combat Online Payment Frauds and Streamline Financial Operations

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated several measures to address the increasing risks of payment frauds and to enhance operational efficiencies in the banking sector.  To combat the rising incidence of domestic payment frauds, which surged by 70.64% to Rs 2,604 crore in the six-month period ended March 2024, the RBI plans to set up a Digital Payments Intelligence Platform. This platform will utilize advanced technologies to mitigate fraud risks. A committee headed by A.P. Hota, former MD & CEO of NPCI, has been formed to examine the setup of this digital infrastructure, with recommendations expected within two months.

Oxford University Agrees to Return Stolen 500-Year-Old Bronze Idol to India

Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum has decided to return a 16th-century bronze sculpture of Saint Tirumankai Alvar to India, following a formal request from the Indian government. The 60cm-tall statue, believed to have been stolen from a temple in Tamil Nadu, was acquired by the museum in 1967 from Sotheby’s auction house. The decision comes after an independent researcher alerted the museum to the statue’s origins, prompting the museum to notify the Indian High Commission.
